In a startling incident, horses from the Household Cavalry broke free during what was described as a "routine exercise" in London, causing alarm among bystanders.
The event, which unfolded on Wednesday, led to injuries for at least four individuals, who were promptly transported to hospital for treatment. The horses, typically housed in Hyde Park Barracks, Knightsbridge, have since been safely retrieved and are currently undergoing care after the ordeal.
The Household Cavalry, a distinguished corps within the Household Division, holds the esteemed status of being the most senior regiment in the British Army. Renowned for their ceremonial duties, they frequently participate in significant state occasions, including the coronation of King Charles III and the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
A spokesperson for the British Army issued a statement regarding the incident, stating, "Several military working horses became loose during a routine exercise this morning. All horses have been successfully recovered and returned to the barracks. Unfortunately, some personnel and horses sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention."
Emergency services, including the London Ambulance Service, responded swiftly to the scene. Patients with injuries related to the incident were attended to on Buckingham Palace Road, Belgrave Square, and the junction between Chancery Lane and Fleet Street.
The City of London Police also provided assistance, containing two loose horses near the Highway in Limehouse. Efforts were made to ensure the safety and well-being of the animals while awaiting transportation via an army horsebox to receive veterinary care.
