Prince Harry, Meghan Markle Spark New Controversy Ahead of Wedding Anniversary

As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle prepare to celebrate their sixth wedding anniversary, they are facing fresh public criticism due to recent revelations.

During their trip to Nigeria, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex accepted two free private flights, raising accusations of hypocrisy given their advocacy against climate change. Nigerian airline Air Peace provided the flights, transporting the royal couple and a few companions on a 120-seat plane for a 664-mile round trip.

The return journey from Abuja to Lagos on May 12 produced approximately 12 tonnes of carbon emissions, significantly higher than the average annual global carbon footprint per person, which is roughly four tonnes.

Despite their efforts to promote sustainability in the tourism industry through initiatives like Travalyst, launched in 2019, Harry and Meghan faced backlash for their decision to accept the complimentary flights.

Stanley Olisa of Air Peace explained that the flights were chartered exclusively for the royals and their entourage, providing them with top-tier treatment onboard. Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis, who accompanied Harry and Meghan, confirmed that the flight had only around 15 to 20 passengers.

The courtesy flights, while offered in celebration of Harry's Invictus Games, contradict Harry's previous statements highlighting the urgent need to address climate change. In speeches and interviews, Harry has emphasized the severity of environmental crises and the importance of taking action.

The couple's actions during their Nigeria tour included engagements focused on mental health, participation in sports activities, and discussions on women's leadership. Meghan also revealed her Nigerian heritage during the trip.

Despite the positive outcomes of their visit, the controversy surrounding the environmental impact of their travel choices has drawn attention and criticism from the public.

As Harry and Meghan approach their anniversary milestone on Sunday, the scrutiny over their actions highlights the challenges they face in aligning their public image with their advocacy efforts.
