New Canadian Officials Refuse Oath of Allegiance to Monarch
King Charles has been dealt an unexpected blow from Canada just a day after Harry returned to the U.S. following a well-received solo visit. Newly elected officials in Dawson City, Yukon, have refused to swear allegiance to the King, causing a complete halt in the local council’s operations.
Mayor Stephen Johnson, elected last month, explained that the refusal was “done with no disrespect to His Majesty King Charles” but described the situation as “a bit of a sticky one.” Without the oath, the council cannot legally perform its duties, and officials have until December 9th to comply or face the invalidation of their positions.
This development follows Harry’s successful tour in Canada, where he promoted the 2025 Invictus Games. During his visit, Harry surprised football fans at The Grey Cup, engaged with veterans and students at The Seaforth Armoury, and held meaningful discussions with Indigenous leaders and young people from the Four Host Nations.
The Sussex office expressed gratitude for the warm reception, stating that Harry “extends his heartfelt thanks to all those contributing to these important conversations and initiatives, ensuring the Games remain a powerful force for healing and change.”
The refusal to swear allegiance echoes similar sentiment seen in Australia, where Senator Lidia Thorpe recently disrupted a parliamentary speech by King Charles, declaring, “This is not your land. You are not our King.” Many in Canada argue that the oath is “outdated,” highlighting the evolving attitudes towards the monarchy in Commonwealth nations.
