Duke of Sussex Criticised for “Cringe” Remarks During Sketch with Jelly Roll
Prince Harry has drawn criticism for his choice of language in a promotional video for the Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025, which featured a playful exchange with country music star Jelly Roll.
The lighthearted video, filmed at New York’s East Side Ink tattoo parlour, was meant to build excitement for the Games, set to take place in Canada in February. In the skit, Jelly Roll jokingly offers to give Harry his first tattoo in exchange for participating in the event.
During the exchange, Harry quipped about getting the tattoo on his "lower back" or "a**e," prompting mixed reactions online. While some fans appreciated the humour, others criticised the Duke’s language as inappropriate for a royal figure.
Social media users voiced their disapproval, with one posting the video on X (formerly Twitter) and calling the PR stunt “cringe.” Royal commentator Angela Levin added her critique, retweeting the clip with the comment, “His bad language doesn’t fit comfortably when you have a title and are over 40.”
Another user commented, “Harry’s a complete embarrassment, cheapens royalty with every ill-thought-out PR stunt.”
Despite the backlash, the video also garnered praise from fans who appreciated Harry’s relatable approach and humour in promoting the Games. The Invictus Games, founded by Harry, aims to inspire and support injured veterans through sports, with this year’s event featuring a closing ceremony headlined by Jelly Roll.
While the video stirred controversy, it successfully brought attention to the Games, highlighting Harry’s ongoing commitment to his passion project despite criticism.
