Sussexes issue statement after Meghan's podcast gift sparks royal backlash
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have responded to the growing controversy surrounding the use of their royal titles, following renewed attention after Meghan’s appearance on The Jamie Kern Lima Show.
The issue flared up after the host revealed she received a personalised gift basket from Meghan, featuring homemade strawberry sauce and ice cream, accompanied by a card that read: “With Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex.” The use of “Her Royal Highness” quickly drew criticism, as the Sussexes were instructed not to use the HRH styling following their departure from royal duties in 2020.
According to Hello! Magazine, the couple’s representatives issued a statement clarifying their stance: “They do not use their HRH titles, despite no formal legal removal of the styles.”
The clarification comes amid rising concern from royal supporters, who viewed the card as a breach of the agreement made with the late Queen Elizabeth II. The backlash was intensified by previous incidents, including a letter from Ukraine’s Minister of Economy addressing Meghan as “Your Royal Highness.”
Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on the latest controversy, continuing its stance of distancing itself from the Montecito-based royals. While Harry and Meghan maintain they are not actively using their HRH titles, the resurfacing of this issue has once again highlighted the lingering tensions between the Sussexes and the Royal Family.
