Future monarch signals changing royal dynamic with major legal shake-up
Prince William has made a defining move as the future King, reportedly cutting ties with King Charles’s longtime legal advisers in a quiet but impactful decision that signals a shift in royal dynamics.
According to The Mail, the Prince of Wales has appointed Mishcon de Reya—the law firm that represented his late mother Princess Diana during her divorce—replacing Harbottle & Lewis, the legal firm long favored by the King. Senior lawyer Gerrard Tyrrell had previously advised both Charles and William on legal matters.
An insider revealed, “William wanted to strike out on his own. He did not want to continue using his father’s lawyers. It’s as simple as that. He wants to be his own man.”
A family friend echoed that sentiment, adding, “He wants to do things differently from his father, and wants to be seen to do them differently.”
Royal expert Richard Eden described the move as a powerful message to the Palace, noting, “William’s decision to branch out from his father’s legal advisers shows that he is more than willing to shake up the status quo behind palace doors.”
Eden also pointed to William’s recent newspaper interview on homelessness—published just a day after Trooping the Colour—which dominated headlines and eclipsed coverage of King Charles’s official birthday parade.
The decision comes as King Charles continues cancer treatment, with Prince William increasingly stepping into a more prominent and independent leadership role within the monarchy.
