Future King takes a tumble in friendly game as England star recalls royal slide tackle
Prince William found himself on the receiving end of an unexpected slide tackle during a charity football match — courtesy of England football legend Jill Scott.
Appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show, Scott shared the amusing story from when she and the Prince of Wales were opening a school together. What was meant to be a light-hearted kickabout turned dramatic when Scott accidentally took out the future King.
“I just had trainers and it was astro turf. I slipped and wiped him out,” she recalled, laughing. “I remember thinking, ‘I’ve just slide-tackled the future King!’”
Scott, who earned 161 caps for England, also reflected on her unconventional MBE delivery during the pandemic. “I missed the parcel. So I went to pick it up… and it was my MBE. It was in the sorting office in Warrington,” she said.
Prince William, who later praised Scott upon her retirement in 2022, humorously referenced their first encounter, writing: “Tiny bit pleased there won't be any more slide tackles during ‘friendly’ kickabouts…”
Despite the tumble, Scott describes William as “such a lovely guy,” showing that even future monarchs aren't immune to the occasional football mishap.
