Royal Family Shares Heartwarming Easter Update on King Charles and Queen Camilla

Monarch continues Maundy tradition at Durham Cathedral amid health battle

Buckingham Palace has released a touching Easter update featuring King Charles III and Queen Camilla, showcasing the monarch’s unwavering commitment to royal tradition despite its ongoing health struggles.

The 76-year-old King and Queen Camilla, 77, visited Durham Cathedral to take part in the annual Royal Maundy Service, where they distributed Maundy money to 76 men and 76 women—one for each year of the King’s life. Each recipient was recognized for their outstanding Christian service and positive contributions to their communities.

The Palace shared photos and videos of the royal couple on the family’s official Instagram account, alongside a heartfelt statement:

“This year taking place at @DurhamCathedral, The King and Queen have attended the annual Maundy Service, during which His Majesty presented Maundy recipients – 76 men and 76 women – with two purses: one red and one white, containing Maundy Money.”

The white purse held specially minted silver Maundy coins, while the red purse featured a £5 coin commemorating the Queen Mother and a 50p coin illustrating stories from World War II.

The Palace also highlighted the deep historical roots of the tradition, which dates back to King John’s Royal Maundy distribution in 1210. Since the 15th century, the number of recipients has corresponded to the monarch’s age. The event now takes place in a different church each year, with the 2025 service held at Durham Cathedral in northeast England.

Earlier in the day, the King delivered his annual Easter message, urging unity, compassion, and love across all faiths and backgrounds. He praised the humanitarian efforts being made around the world—emphasizing that such work transcends religious and cultural boundaries.

King Charles’s continued participation in royal duties sends a powerful message of resilience and service, reflecting his dedication to the Crown and its enduring traditions.
