Monarch opens up about ongoing treatment and praises compassion amid illness
King Charles III has delivered a deeply personal message as he continues weekly cancer treatments, describing his diagnosis as a “daunting and at times frightening experience.”
The 76-year-old monarch’s remarks came ahead of a Buckingham Palace reception for cancer charities, where he acknowledged both the emotional toll of the disease and the strength found in human compassion. “I can vouch for the fact that it can also be an experience that brings into sharp focus the very best of humanity,” he shared.
Diagnosed in February 2024 following a procedure for an enlarged prostate, the King’s condition was later confirmed to be cancer. Since then, he has been undergoing regular treatment at a London hospital and resumed public duties in April.
In his statement, the King drew attention to the stark reality that around 1,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each day, and he expressed heartfelt gratitude for the care, comfort, and support he has received.
On Thursday, King Charles and Queen Camilla, joined by the Duchess of Gloucester, will host the Palace event to honour cancer charities and emphasise the importance of early detection and preventative action.
