Despite Ongoing Rift, Monarch Includes Grandchildren in Funeral Plans While William Remains Firm on Royal Duties
Though strained relations persist between the Duke of Sussex and the royal family, King Charles has reportedly extended an olive branch by including Archie and Lilibet in the plans for his future state funeral.
According to The Telegraph, the monarch—who is undergoing weekly cancer treatment—has expressed a deep desire to reunite with his grandchildren, whom he has never met in person. While Palace aides remain cautious, citing concerns over Harry’s perceived unreliability with private matters, the King remains hopeful for reconciliation in time.
As part of the evolving ceremonial arrangements—often planned years in advance—the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to participate in the key components of the funeral, with their children included in roles of significance. Sources revealed that Archie and Lilibet have been considered for attendance at both Westminster Abbey and the committal at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.
The plan also places Harry alongside his brother, the future King William, during the public processions, and grants the Sussexes a place of prominence during the family vigil and service.
In contrast, reports indicate that Prince William has no intention of assigning formal royal roles to his niece and nephew when he becomes monarch—a move not driven by animosity toward the children, but by the wider rift with Harry. Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams noted that while the Sussex children are not at the heart of the family tensions, decisions about titles and duties ultimately lie with the sovereign.
Still, Charles’s inclusion of Archie and Lilibet suggests a personal commitment to family unity, however distant it may seem for now.
