Beatrice and Eugenie sidelined from balcony appearance due to lingering scandal
King Charles has been generous in involving his nieces, the daughters of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, in royal engagements despite their non-working status. However, with Trooping the Colour approaching, hopes that they might be included in the traditional balcony appearance have been dashed.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told GB News that granting them such a prominent role could stir controversy, given the ongoing stigma surrounding their father, Prince Andrew. The disgraced royal was stripped of his titles and duties following accusations linked to his association with convicted financier Jeffrey Epstein and a high-profile sexual assault lawsuit.
“The balcony appearance is an iconic moment for the monarchy, and any link to Andrew remains too toxic,” Fitzwilliams said. He cautioned that showcasing the sisters at such a visible event could backfire, despite the King’s fondness for them.
Sources suggest that Buckingham Palace still values the sisters’ loyalty and contributions. Royal author Ingrid Seward has also indicated that Prince William may seek to include his cousins more formally once he ascends the throne.
