Monarch Embraces Horse Racing Tradition Amid Changing Royal Duties
King Charles III is set to attend all five days of Royal Ascot this year, joined by Queen Camilla, as he nurtures a growing enthusiasm for the prestigious racing event.
Insiders say the monarch has been “pleasantly surprised” by his deepening interest in the occasion—once a tribute to his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, but now a genuine personal pursuit.
“Camilla has been passionate about horse racing for many years, but the King has surprised himself by how much he enjoys it,” a source told The Sun.
The royal couple will view the races from the Royal Box, with two of the King's horses competing during the festival. His heightened interest in the sport coincides with his decision to sit out horseback duties at this year’s Trooping the Colour.
Owing to ongoing health issues following his cancer diagnosis, the 76-year-old monarch will participate in Saturday’s official birthday parade by carriage instead.
Meanwhile, Princess Anne will return to horseback for the event. Nearly a year after suffering head injuries in a horse-related accident, the 74-year-old royal is expected to fulfil her ceremonial role as Gold Stick and Colonel of the Blues and Royals during the King’s Birthday Parade.
