Monarch takes part in ancient Ceremony of the Keys ahead of key celebrations
King Charles made an unannounced visit to Lancaster Castle on 9 June, his first official trip to the historic site since his coronation.
The 76-year-old monarch, in his role as Duke of Lancaster, took part in the centuries-old Ceremony of the Keys. He was formally handed the symbolic keys to the castle, continuing a royal tradition that dates back to Queen Victoria. The late Queen Elizabeth II last received the keys during her visit in 2015.
Greeted by cheering schoolchildren and a military band, the King shared the moment on the royal family’s Instagram account, writing: “It was wonderful to meet so many members of the local community at Lancaster Castle this morning!”
Inside the castle grounds, Charles met local artisans and businesses, including cheesemakers, wool producers, and furniture craftsmen, each showcasing the region’s rich heritage.
The visit concluded with a reception where the King spoke with charity volunteers and community leaders, underscoring his ongoing support for local initiatives.
