Private Balmoral stay scrapped as monarch insists on formal protocol
King Charles has imposed a major condition ahead of Donald Trump’s upcoming state visit to the UK — scrapping any plans for a private visit and insisting the trip remain strictly official.
Initially, the former U.S. president was expected to enjoy a more personal visit to Balmoral Castle in Scotland, but that plan has been abandoned in favour of a full state ceremony at Windsor Castle, according to The Times.
The shift reportedly came after Prime Minister Keir Starmer negotiated directly with the White House, securing a higher-profile visit — even as sources suggest the move went “against the wishes of the King.” However, Palace insiders have denied any rift between the monarch and the government, stressing that state visits are arranged on government advice, while the royal household handles ceremonial logistics.
The decision comes amid renewed diplomatic strain following Trump’s controversial remark about making Canada the 51st U.S. state, a comment that raised eyebrows shortly after King Charles had extended a personal written invitation.
According to royal correspondent Rebecca English, Charles has now made it clear that any informal or personal visit is off the table. Only the formal state programme will go ahead, which includes official meetings, ceremonial receptions, and diplomatic engagements.
A formal Manu Regia invitation was recently hand-delivered to the White House by the British Embassy in Washington, confirming the visit will proceed — but on the King’s terms.
