Prince Harry and Meghan hire former PR chief of The Crown amid royal tensions

New communications director’s Netflix ties raise eyebrows as rift with royal family deepens

Harry and Meghan Markle have appointed a new communications director whose past role is already stirring controversy within royal circles.

Emily Robinson, the Sussexes’ latest hire, previously oversaw global publicity for The Crown — the Netflix drama that has often drawn criticism for its dramatic portrayal of Harry’s family. Her appointment comes as tensions between the Sussexes and the rest of the royal family remain unresolved.

According to The Mail, the Duke and Duchess were fully aware of Robinson’s connection to The Crown before bringing her on board. A source told the outlet, “She was always very charming and supportive to [creator] Peter Morgan and all the actors in The Crown.”

Robinson handled publicity for seasons three through six — which included controversial moments such as the depiction of Prince Harry in Nazi fancy dress, Princess Diana’s Panorama interview, and fictionalised scenes involving Diana’s ghost.

Critics argue the move signals that Harry and Meghan have little intention of repairing relations with the monarchy. One insider remarked it was “almost beyond belief” the couple would hire someone “straight from The Crown” given the current climate.

Harry has previously defended the series, stating in a 2021 interview with James Corden, “They don’t pretend to be news. It’s fiction… I’m way more comfortable with The Crown than I am seeing the stories written about my family or my wife.”

He later joked to Stephen Colbert about watching the show and obsessively fact-checking it.
