Duke Earns Praise in Montecito While Duchess Reportedly Struggles to Connect
Prince Harry has reportedly made a strong impression in Montecito, winning over locals with his charm and accessibility, while Meghan Markle is said to be facing a growing social snub for remaining distant and reserved within the exclusive community.
Since stepping down from royal life in 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been living in California with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. But according to Daily Mail royal commentator Richard Mineards, their efforts to settle into the area have been met with very different receptions.
Mineards recounted a telling incident involving an elderly historian who attempted to deliver a documentary to Meghan shortly after the couple moved in — only to be turned away at the gate. The moment, he suggested, reflected the Duchess’s highly controlled public image and lack of visibility within Montecito.
“She pays attention to every appearance, every word, every gesture,” Mineards said. “But here in Montecito, we value simplicity — even in those who are famous.”
Locals have reportedly criticised Meghan for not making an effort to fit in, describing her as “practically invisible.”
By contrast, Prince Harry has been praised for his natural friendliness. “He’s always charming, approachable, with that recognizable Windsor accent,” Mineards noted, adding that the Duke is regularly seen at local beaches, coffee shops, or cycling around the hills.
“Harry has kept his good-natured side,” he continued. “He seems more at ease here, even while facing personal struggles.”
The Sussexes have not issued any comment regarding these claims, but the contrast in public sentiment signals a quiet personal victory for Harry — and continued challenges for Meghan in connecting with their Californian community.
