Memoir seen as final opportunity to revive Sussexes’ fading streaming deal
Harry is reportedly being encouraged to transform his explosive memoir Spare into a Netflix series, as the couple’s $100 million deal with the streaming giant nears its September expiration.
Industry insiders believe the rights to the bestselling book could fetch "tens of millions of dollars," with early talks already suggesting a high-profile three- or four-part drama adaptation. A senior Hollywood production source noted the project could be the Sussexes’ last major chance to regain momentum on the platform.
Since the initial success of Harry & Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have struggled to replicate that impact, with subsequent releases receiving lukewarm responses.
The memoir, released in January 2023, has contributed to Harry’s estrangement from his family after it detailed sensational claims—including allegations that the Prince of Wales physically assaulted him, and that King Charles allegedly told Princess Diana he was grateful to have "an heir and a spare."
A source told the Daily Mail, "Spare is the one ace the couple can play to guarantee blockbuster ratings and ensure themselves another potentially huge payday."
The potential limited series could act as both a financial and reputational lifeline for the Sussexes. With The Crown concluding in late 2023, Netflix is reportedly eager to fill the royal-themed gap in its programming—and Spare may be their best option.
According to LA-based media analyst Martin Cobb, Harry is "sitting on an even bigger goldmine" with the screen rights. “If he decides his relationships with his family are irredeemable, he may well go ahead and cash in—especially now, as he and Meghan are struggling to maintain the momentum they once had with Netflix,” Cobb said.
