Prince William is taking a bold step on the global stage as he prepares to host the fifth Earthshot Prize Awards in Rio de Janeiro later this year—an event he hopes will set an inspiring example for the world.
Continuing the legacy of his father, King Charles, a lifelong advocate for environmental causes, the Prince of Wales launched the Earthshot Prize in 2020 to spotlight innovative, practical solutions for tackling climate change and pollution.
This year’s ceremony, set for November 5 at Rio’s Museum of Tomorrow, marks the first time the awards will be held in Latin America. The timing is significant, falling just days before Brazil hosts the COP30 climate summit in Belém.
Speaking at London Climate Action Week, Prince William shared his personal excitement about the upcoming visit. “From a personal point of view, I’ve always wanted to get to South America, particularly Brazil,” he said. “The amount of ecosystem, environmental interest and passion that is there—it’s really important.”
He praised the region’s commitment to sustainability, adding, “They epitomise what we can be doing more sustainably. The vibrancy, the energy, the enthusiasm—I think the awards will be spectacular.”
As the heir to the throne, William is making it clear he intends to lead with purpose—and use his platform to inspire environmental progress around the globe.
