Streaming giant may be holding out for the drama, not the content, expert claims
Meghan Markle and Harry may still have a shot at preserving their Netflix deal—but not for the reasons they might hope. According to a PR expert, the couple's widely rumored marital troubles could be the very reason Netflix is keeping the contract alive.
Reports last week suggested that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's multi-million-dollar partnership with the streaming service would not be renewed after it ends in September. But insiders now claim negotiations are ongoing, and the final decision is yet to be made.
PR strategist Dermot McNamara believes the delay is deliberate. He told The Mirror that Netflix might be holding off in anticipation of a high-stakes twist: a possible split between the Sussexes.
“The fairytale image has faded, their shows haven't delivered, and public interest is dwindling,” McNamara said. “But if signs of a break-up emerge, demand for their story could explode—and that's what Netflix is likely banking on.”
His comments follow the underwhelming performance of Meghan's latest project, With Love, Meghan, which attracted just 5.3 million views and landed at 383 on Netflix's most-watched list in early 2025. Even reruns of Suits surpassed it in popularity.
Despite continued denials from the couple—Harry once joked they'd “divorced maybe 10, 12 times”—the speculation persists. And according to McNamara, Netflix may be quietly waiting for the real-life drama to unfold.
“They could be sitting on a blockbuster—just not the kind Meghan and Harry intended,” he added. “This is Hollywood, after all.”
