Calls grow for Sussexes to reveal finances after Prince William’s tax disclosure
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are once again under pressure, this time over their finances, as public debate intensifies following Kensington Palace’s recent statement on Prince William’s tax status.
The Duke of Cambridge’s office confirmed that William pays the highest rate of income tax on earnings from the Duchy of Cornwall—though the exact figure remains undisclosed. The move has reignited criticism of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, with commentators questioning why similar financial transparency hasn’t been demanded from them.
Since stepping down from their royal roles in 2020, Harry and Meghan have secured lucrative deals—including a reported multi-million-dollar agreement with Netflix—while continuing to live in luxury in Montecito, California. Their private wealth has long sparked conversation, though their tax obligations have largely escaped public attention—until now.
Broadcaster Esther Krakue, speaking on The Sun’s podcast, argued that if Prince William’s finances are open to scrutiny, then Harry’s should be as well. “If you're going to have those conversations, then you might as well have them about Harry too,” she said, pointing to the Duke’s reported £10 million inheritance from the Queen Mother.
Royal editor Matt Wilkinson noted the lack of transparency surrounding the Sussexes' finances, describing the matter as “very secretive.” Krakue went further, saying, “Why aren’t we criticising them? Because it’s just distasteful… and I think we should extend the same courtesy to William.”
As questions around royal wealth, privacy, and accountability continue to swirl, the Sussexes now find themselves at the center of a fresh debate—one that could place even greater pressure on their public image.
