King Charles’ Former Racing Rival Derek ‘Tommo’ Thompson Retires After Iconic 60-Year Career

Broadcaster who once outraced the future King bids farewell to horse racing

Veteran broadcaster and former amateur jockey Derek ‘Tommo’ Thompson is officially retiring, bringing to close an extraordinary 60-year journey in the world of horse racing.

Best known for his infectious enthusiasm and unmistakable voice, the 74-year-old has been a fixture on screens and airwaves through his work with BBC Radio, ITV, Channel 4, and Sky Sports.

But Thompson's legacy isn't confined to the commentary box. Back in 1980, he famously beat the then-Prince Charles during a charity flat race at Plumpton—an event that marked Charles’ debut as an amateur jockey. What could have been a memorable royal victory turned into a light-hearted story that still gets laughs today.

“I beat the future King,” Thompson recalled fondly. And the King hasn't forgotten either. "I saw him at Royal Ascot last year and said, 'Sorry, Sir. I beat you all those years ago.'" The King, ever gracious, replied, "Don't worry. I forgave you." To which Queen Camilla added with a smile, “But I haven't, Tommo!”

As he prepares to call his final race at Wolverhampton, Thompson leaves behind a lasting impact on the sport he loves. From the racetrack to the broadcast booth, his passion, wit, and charisma have earned him a cherished place in the hearts of racing fans across the UK.

Tuesday's send-off will mark the end of an era—for the sport, for the fans, and for a man who once outran King.
