The Princess Royal stands firm, requesting no fuss despite Palace plans
Princess Anne has issued a clear message to Buckingham Palace: no grand celebrations for her upcoming 75th birthday. Known for her dedication to duty and low-key nature, the Princess Royal is reportedly avoiding discussions around a large-scale event, choosing instead to mark the milestone quietly and with purpose.
According to The Sunday Times, Anne told aides that she only celebrates birthdays that end in a zero, remarking, “not for the fives,” in reference to her long-standing stance on birthday festivities.
Despite Palace officials suggesting something more formal for the occasion, Anne remains focused on her charitable work. Speaking at an event in June, her private secretary, Colonel John Boyd, confirmed her wishes. “The way the princess wants to celebrate this milestone is to replicate what she's done on previous significant birthdays and hold this charities forum,” he explained. “Her Royal Highness wants to understand how she can continue supporting charities during these times of change.”
During the event, Anne acknowledged the organizations she represents, saying: “You very kindly asked me to become patron of your organizations, so it's an honor for me to have all of you here.”
While the Palace has respected her wish for a modest birthday, the Princess Royal has still been honored in a fitting way. The Royal Mint unveiled a commemorative £5 coin—the first in the UK to bear its likeness. The portrait, created by renowned royal photographer John Swannell, celebrates Anne's decades of tireless service to more than 400 charities and patronages.
True to form, Princess Anne's 75th will not be defined by grandeur—but by gratitude, service, and substance.
