Former royal chef reveals mother and son had very different tastes
Prince Harry may have been close to his mother, but when it came to food, the two didn’t always see eye to eye.
Princess Diana adored lobster, particularly lobster thermidor, which she often requested from her personal chef Darren McGrady at Kensington Palace. But according to McGrady, Harry wanted no part of it.
“It’s true that Prince Harry was never a fan of lobster,” McGrady recently shared on Instagram. “His mother loved it but would never order it when out with friends. She thought it too expensive.” Instead, Diana had the dish prepared privately at home at least once a week.
When William and Harry were around, however, the menu was far more relaxed. Diana often swapped fine dining for family favourites: BBQ baby back ribs with corn, followed by banana flan or ice cream. “Everyone happy!” McGrady recalled.
Lobster remains a divisive dish, and Harry isn’t alone in his dislike. Nutritionist Charlotte Faure Green describes it as “a bit of a rags to riches story,” once considered cheap fare before becoming a luxury indulgence. “The taste is just not for everyone,” she explained. “Some love its sweet, briny flavour and delicate texture, while others find it overhyped or simply too fiddly to eat.”
For Diana, lobster was a quiet pleasure. For Harry, it was something best left off the plate.
