Prince Harry’s Tribute Sparks Debate Over Royal Memorials

Duke of Sussex honours veterans and Prince Philip on VJ Day amid criticism of “profiteering”

Prince Harry’s latest tribute has stirred both praise and criticism, as the Duke of Sussex marked the 80th anniversary of VJ Day with a personal gesture in memory of the “Forgotten Army” and his late grandfather, Prince Philip.

At the weekend’s commemorations, Harry arranged for a wreath and letter to be placed at the Burma Star Memorial in Staffordshire after the official ceremony had ended. In his message, he praised the courage of those who fought in the gruelling Far East campaign, writing that their sacrifices were “anything but forgettable” and allowed later generations to live in freedom. He also reflected on the reconciliation that followed, noting that former enemies had become “valued partners in peace.”

The tribute carried special meaning for the Duke, whose grandfather served in the Pacific campaign. Harry recalled Philip speaking “with quiet humility” about those years and his lasting respect for those who fought beside him.

While royal commentators described the gesture as heartfelt and “appropriately handled,” some critics accused Harry of once again blurring the line between sincere remembrance and using royal connections for personal gain. Similar backlash followed the couple’s brief public tribute to Prince Philip in 2021, which was dismissed by some as cold and detached.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams, however, suggested the VJ Day gesture could be seen as an olive branch, noting that Harry’s quiet approach this time showed respect both for veterans and his grandfather’s memory.

As with many of Harry’s actions since stepping back from royal life, the tribute has reignited debate about whether he is honouring the legacy of those who came before him, or whether, as some allege, he risks commercialising royal remembrance.
