Prince William and Princess Anne prepare for rugby rivalry

Welsh and Scottish royal patrons could face off at Women’s World Cup

Prince William and Princess Anne are set for a lighthearted clash of loyalties as their rugby teams go head-to-head next week in the Women’s Rugby World Cup. The Prince of Wales serves as Patron of Welsh Rugby, while his aunt, the Princess Royal, holds the same role for Scottish Rugby.

The upcoming match between Wales and Scotland could see both royals in the stands, backing their sides. It would not be the first time this year that they’ve brought royal attention to the sport. In March, William attended the Six Nations match between England and Wales with Catherine, who is Patron of the English Rugby Football Union and Rugby Football League.

Anne, a long-time supporter of Scotland’s teams, has often been spotted cheering from the sidelines at rugby fixtures.

As host nation, England will open the tournament with a match against the USA, and Catherine may also make an appearance despite currently being away with her family. She has been a regular at major sporting events this year, from Wimbledon to the men’s football final alongside William, George, and Charlotte.
