Duchess of Sussex faces mixed reactions as third season hangs in the balance
Meghan Markle is waiting on Netflix to make a key announcement about the future of her series, just weeks after she and Harry renewed their contract with the platform.
The Duchess of Sussex released the second season of With Love, Meghan last week. While it avoided the wave of criticism that plagued its debut, it hasn’t generated the kind of buzz that might guarantee a third season. The show’s first outing drew harsh reviews, leaving many to question whether Netflix would continue investing in the project.
Eric Schiffer, chairman of Reputation Management Consultants, told Newsweek that the outlook isn’t promising. “Even with Chrissy Teigen and Tan France glitter-bombing the set, the series hit the pavement,” he said, adding that season two “missed by a mile” and struggled to attract even hate-watchers. In his view, that lack of momentum suggests season three is “unlikely.”
Still, not everyone sees the situation as dire. Writing in Vanity Fair, journalist Erin Vanderhoof pointed out that Netflix has already confirmed it will continue to work with the couple’s production company, Archewell. The deal, however, is now a first-look arrangement rather than the broader contract the Sussexes initially signed.
Although the future of With Love, Meghan remains undecided, Netflix has announced a With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration special, set to air in December. Both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have yet to comment on what lies ahead.
