The Duchess of Sussex’s latest comments about “embracing uncertainty” have reignited talk of friction with the royal family.
Meghan Markle is once again under scrutiny for her latest public appearance, with critics claiming her remarks carried thinly veiled digs at the royal family.
Speaking at the Fortune Most Powerful Women summit in Washington, DC, the Duchess of Sussex reflected on her and Harry’s 2020 decision to step back from royal duties. She told the audience she has learned to embrace uncertainty, describing those years as a time for “nesting and healing.”
“I think five years ago was a very different situation for all of us. Archie was so little, and I had just gotten pregnant with Lili around that same time. So we were nesting. Nesting and healing,” she said. “There was no plan. It was just, let’s get through these next couple of years, create community, which was always so important to both of us in our new environment.”
While Meghan’s words appeared reflective, royal commentator Hilary Fordwich told Fox News Digital that her comments could be read as subtle jabs at the monarchy. “Her remarks are less than subtle digs again at the monarchy’s supposed interpersonal shortcomings,” Fordwich said. “She’s trying to reshape her narrative while continuing to project her independence.”
Fordwich added that Meghan’s phrasing—particularly her references to “healing” and lacking a plan—may come across as a critique of royal rigidity. “Either she’s oblivious to the digs she’s making, or they’re deliberate,” she said. “If they’re deliberate, she reinforces those who view her as vindictive.”
British broadcaster Helena Chard agreed, describing Meghan’s remarks as part of a broader public relations push. “She’s in the middle of a PR blitz to promote her brand,” Chard said. “Meghan knows the royal family remains valuable to her image and ensures she stays connected to that legacy, even as she distances herself from it.”
The comments arrive amid reported efforts by King Charles to mend relations with Harry, making Meghan’s words all the more scrutinised by royal watchers.
