Expert defends Harry and Meghan, accusing the royal family of double standards in their treatment compared to Andrew.
Harry and Meghan have found renewed support after a royal expert accused the monarchy of treating them unfairly while shielding Andrew for years. The criticism follows King Charles’s long-awaited decision to strip his brother of all remaining titles and honours, officially renaming him Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.
The move, though applauded by many, has raised questions about why it took so long, given Andrew’s history of scandals. In contrast, Harry and Meghan were swiftly distanced from the royal family after stepping back from their duties and publicly voicing their struggles.
Royal commentator Afua Acheampong-Hagan told the Mirror that the disparity in treatment was striking. “If you look at the palace language, especially around mental health, [Andrew] has been so protected—so mollycoddled,” she said. She also pointed out that the disgraced royal continues to receive support from the King’s personal funds, including payments related to Sandringham.
Afua argued that Harry and Meghan were “completely excommunicated,” noting that Harry went through a long period without meaningful communication with his father, something he has spoken about publicly. “The way they’ve been treated is pretty diabolical,” she said.
She believes the difference stems from prejudice against Meghan, who is older, divorced, an actress, and a woman of colour. “Look how protected Andrew is—the Queen’s favourite son. That same level of compassion was never shown to Meghan when she struggled with her mental health,” Afua added.
Her remarks have reignited the debate about equality within the royal family, leaving many questioning whether the King’s recent actions truly reflect fairness—or highlight a deeper issue of double standards.
