The Duke of Sussex looked uncomfortable when the host joked about his memoir during an otherwise thoughtful discussion on mental health and social media.
Prince Harry found himself in an awkward moment during a candid appearance on the Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know podcast on Wednesday. The Duke of Sussex joined the comedian to discuss mental health and the challenges facing children as social media and artificial intelligence continue to merge.
While the conversation covered serious ground, Hasan Minhaj’s signature mix of wit and satire created some lighthearted moments—though not all of them landed well. According to body language expert Judi James, Harry appeared uneasy when the discussion turned to his memoir, Spare.
James told The Mirror that Harry’s expression changed when Minhaj quoted a passage from the book about buying clothes from TKMaxx after his father, King Charles, limited his official clothing allowance. “Harry’s change of expression suggests he believed this was the point where they would speak seriously about his mental health,” she explained. “But the quote the host chose seemed to catch him off guard.”
As Minhaj dramatically read from the memoir, Harry appeared momentarily unsure how to respond but eventually laughed along. James observed that he occasionally glanced toward the crew, seemingly looking for reassurance on whether to play along or stay quiet.
Despite the awkward exchange, there was no sign of hostility in Minhaj’s tone. His teasing seemed more in line with his usual comedic style than a deliberate attempt to embarrass his guest. Still, the brief tension highlighted how easily humour and sincerity can clash when a deeply personal story becomes the subject of a joke.
