Former royal chef reveals the strict routine behind the monarch’s first meal of the day
King Charles is known for paying close attention to what he eats, especially at breakfast, according to his former chef Darren McGrady.
The monarch, who strongly believes in healthy living, prefers his morning meal prepared in a very specific way. Speaking to Hello!, McGrady shared how even the smallest detail mattered.
“The instruction was to put two plums and a little juice into the bowl and send it in to him for breakfast,” he explained.
However, Charles would usually eat only one of the plums. “I’d send in two plums and he would take one, so it would come back out after breakfast. I’d then put the other plum back in the jar and save it,” McGrady said.
One morning, the chef decided to test the routine. Knowing the King only ate one plum, he sent just a single piece instead of two. It did not go unnoticed.
“The attending staff member came through and said, ‘Can His Royal Highness have two please?’” McGrady recalled. “So after that, I had to keep sending two in every morning.”
Beyond his breakfast habits, King Charles has also faced renewed attention over his handling of Prince Andrew’s position within the Royal Family.
Some royal watchers have praised his decision to distance himself from his brother, while others have questioned whether the move goes far enough.
Writing for Hello!, royal expert Robert Jobson addressed the issue directly. “The answer is simple: he can’t,” he said.
Jobson explained that removing Andrew from the line of succession is not something the King can do on his own. “It is not a matter of royal decree,” he wrote. “It would require an Act of Parliament, and not just approval from MPs at Westminster.”
