The Duchess of Sussex says the hobby teaches confidence, friendship and dedication
Meghan Markle has shared that she would love for Princess Lilibet to develop an interest in Girl Scouts, a hobby that played an important role in her own childhood.
The Duchess of Sussex, who was a Girl Scout herself, recently spoke about the values the organisation teaches and why she hopes her daughter might one day explore it too. Speaking at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Meghan said the experience helps children build strong character from an early age.
“It really embeds such great values from the get-go,” she explained. “I was a Girl Scout, my mum was a troop leader, and I think the value of friendship and being dedicated to a goal really shows. You can see it in Cookie Queens, how these girls stick with something that’s important to them and don’t give up.”
Meghan previously told Deadline that self-belief is one of the most important lessons the programme offers. “Self-belief is an integral value that comes with being a Girl Scout,” she said, adding that she and her family are open to whatever feels right for Lilibet as she grows.
She also spoke warmly about working on the project with her friend Alysa Nahmias, who directed a documentary on the subject. Meghan said both women felt a personal connection to the story because they are mothers.
“Alysa is a mum of a daughter, and for both of us working on this project has been incredibly special,” she said. “As parents, it’s meaningful to create something our girls will be able to enjoy and watch as well.”
