Former Duke of York reportedly offers to quit line of succession after arrest and police questioning
Prince Andrew is said to be seeking a major deal with King Charles as he tries to avoid the risk of prison following a recent arrest.
The former Duke of York was taken into custody earlier this week and later released after spending the day being questioned by detectives from Thames Valley Police. The investigation centres on allegations that Andrew passed confidential government documents to Jeffrey Epstein while serving as a trade envoy. Police confirmed earlier this month that they were examining the claims.
According to royal commentator Rob Shuter, Andrew is now prepared to make sweeping concessions in a bid to protect himself. Writing on his Substack, Shuter claimed the former royal is willing to remove himself from the line of succession entirely if it helps him stay out of jail.
Sources quoted by Shuter say Andrew is also pushing for guarantees that he can remain in his home for life, relocate his horses, and ensure his daughters’ titles are protected. At present, Andrew is eighth in line to the throne.
One insider said the simplest solution would be for Andrew to step aside voluntarily, as removing him through legislation would require agreement across dozens of Commonwealth realms. But those close to the situation suggest the real issue is not constitutional process, but survival.
“He would give up his place without hesitation if it keeps him out of a cell,” another source said. “Jail is the one outcome he cannot control.”
