King Charles attends major royal ceremony as Duke of Edinburgh misses event over health concern
Buckingham Palace has shared an update following Prince Edward’s sudden withdrawal from a royal engagement alongside King Charles.
The Duke of Edinburgh had been scheduled to attend a ceremony at St James’ Palace with the King on Thursday. However, he was forced to pull out at the last minute due to a health concern. While the Palace did not go into detail about his condition, it confirmed that the engagement went ahead as planned.
Photos from the event were later shared on the official Instagram account of Buckingham Palace, showing King Charles, Queen Camilla, and other senior royals in attendance.
According to the caption, the King presented the Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Higher and Further Education, recognising outstanding work across universities and colleges throughout the UK. The statement added that the Queen, Princess Anne, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester joined the presentation ceremony at St James’ Palace, where 19 institutions were honoured.
The caption also noted that Princess Anne attended in her role as Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, which received an award for the research and education delivered by its Centre for Fire Safety Engineering.
Prince Edward’s absence marked a noticeable change to the line-up, but the Palace’s update appeared to play down concerns, focusing instead on the success of the event and its recipients.
