The Duke of Sussex reflects on how becoming a parent reshaped his outlook and personal growth
Prince Harry has spoken candidly about how fatherhood has changed him, calling it one of the most meaningful and transformative roles in his life.
The Duke of Sussex, who married Meghan Markle in 2018 and welcomed his first son Prince Archie in 2020, shared that becoming a parent prompted a shift in how he views himself and the world around him.
Speaking at the Whitten Oval, home of AFL club the Western Bulldogs, Harry reflected on how parenting continues to evolve over time. He explained that raising children today comes with a sense of responsibility to prepare them for a rapidly changing world.
“Our kids are our upgrade,” Harry said during the discussion. He clarified that he was not suggesting he had “upgraded” his own father or that his children had upgraded him, but rather that each generation must grow and adapt to meet the challenges of its time.
Harry also spoke about the importance of self-improvement, noting that many parents strive to become the best version of themselves for the sake of their children. From a personal development perspective, he said, the experience of parenting often pushes people to reflect on their behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
Describing fatherhood as deeply meaningful, Harry said it gives a strong sense of purpose. He added that the early days and weeks after a child’s birth can be particularly demanding, both emotionally and physically.
He also recalled noticing how sensitive young children can be to their parents’ emotions. According to Harry, when he felt stressed, Archie would sense it almost immediately whenever he held him.
