Queen Elizabeth II’s Fashion Told the Story of Her Life

Royal experts say her carefully chosen outfits connected with people and left a lasting influence on designers

Queen Elizabeth II’s fashion was far more than personal style. Her outfits quietly told the story of her life while helping her connect with people around the world.

The late monarch, who died in 2022, became known for her distinctive wardrobe choices that balanced practicality with elegance. According to royal experts, every detail of her clothing was considered, turning her fashion into a subtle form of communication.

Caroline de Guitaut, Surveyor of The King's Works of Art at the Royal Collection Trust, described the Queen’s style as remarkable because it reflected “a lifetime of thoughtful choices”.

She explained that clothing creates an immediate connection with people. Seeing the garments the Queen wore on different occasions can bring back memories from across many moments of her life.

Practicality also played a key role in her wardrobe. Fabrics were selected carefully so they would not crease easily, and garments were often weighted to ensure they fell neatly. Designs also avoided unnecessary details that might interfere with greeting the public or stepping in and out of a carriage.

Beyond official engagements, her casual looks also left a strong mark on fashion. Her headscarf paired with a tweed jacket and tartan skirt, or a hacking jacket worn with jodhpurs, became recognisable elements of her off-duty style.

According to de Guitaut, these relaxed outfits went on to inspire many designers, with some elements of her wardrobe eventually moving beyond fashion trends and becoming iconic symbols of her personal style.
