Monarch shares childhood memories and heartfelt ties to the island
King Charles offered a warm and lightly humorous glimpse into his family life as he reflected on his close bond with his sister, Princess Anne.
Speaking during a garden party in Bermuda, the King looked back on their childhood, recalling time spent travelling aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia. The moment carried a personal tone, as he spoke about the deep connection his family has long shared with the island.
Raising a toast, the monarch described Bermuda as a cherished part of the British family, highlighting its lasting friendship and significance among the Overseas Territories. He noted that the island holds special meaning for him personally, especially given its place in royal history.
King Charles reflected on how his late parents, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, made Bermuda the first stop of their Coronation Tour in 1953. He added that both of them returned on later occasions, as did Princess Anne, who has visited frequently over the years.
In a candid remark, the King joked about his sister’s tireless schedule, saying she travels so widely that he struggles to keep up with her. The comment drew smiles and added a relaxed note to the formal occasion.
He also shared his appreciation for being invited back, calling the visit deeply meaningful. With a touch of humour, King Charles pointed out that it was surprisingly the first time in Bermuda’s 400-year history that a reigning monarch had visited, quipping that he was sorry it had taken so long.
Closing his remarks on a warm note, the King said it had been a pleasure meeting so many people from across the islands, joking that it felt like he had greeted half the population in a single day.
