Lady Pamela Hicks, a close royal relative and lifelong friend of Queen Elizabeth II, dies aged 97
King Charles and Princess Anne have received sad family news just one day before Peter Phillips is set to marry Harriet Sperling in a private ceremony.
Lady Pamela Hicks, a respected figure within royal circles and a close relative of the King, has died peacefully at the age of 97, her family confirmed on Friday.
The daughter of Louis Mountbatten, Lady Pamela was a first cousin of Prince Philip and a childhood friend of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Over the decades, she remained closely connected to the royal family and witnessed many of its most significant moments.
Her daughter, India Hicks, announced the news on Instagram alongside a photograph of her mother.
“My mother died peacefully today,” India wrote. “Whilst there is no tragedy in the death of a 97-year-old who has lived a full life, I know grief will be unavoidable, lurking around waiting for me, but today I am simply grateful that she was my mother.”
She went on to praise Lady Pamela’s character, describing her as someone who carried her remarkable memories with humour and grace throughout her life.
“My mother maintained right up to the end the impeccable style, sharp mind, and effortless charm that made her not only a cherished institution, but truly the last of her kind,” she added.
The announcement comes as preparations continue for the wedding of Princess Anne’s son, Peter Phillips, who is expected to marry Harriet Sperling in a private ceremony in England on Saturday.
The loss of Lady Pamela marks a moment of sadness for the royal family as they gather for what would otherwise be a joyful family occasion.
