Meghan Markle’s emotional moment at Princess Diana’s grave has resurfaced as reports suggest she and Prince Harry could return to the UK with their children next month.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to bring Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, to Britain in the coming weeks. The visit is understood to be linked to Harry’s appearance at events marking the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.
If the trip goes ahead, it would mark the first time Meghan and the children have returned to the UK since 2022.
Speculation has also grown around a possible visit to Althorp House, the Spencer family estate where Princess Diana is buried. The estate is reportedly closed to visitors on July 10 and 11, leading to questions over whether Harry and his family may visit or stay there during their time in Britain.
Harry has stayed at Althorp before. The estate is owned by Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, and Harry reportedly stayed there during past UK visits, including when he returned in August 2024 for the funeral of his uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes.
Princess Diana died in 1997 at the age of 36 after a car crash in Paris. She was laid to rest at Althorp, on an island in the middle of the ornamental lake known as The Round Oval. Her grave is not open to the public.
Archie and Lilibet are not believed to have visited their grandmother’s resting place before. However, Harry previously wrote in Spare about taking Meghan there in 2022, around the 25th anniversary of Diana’s death.
In the memoir, Harry described the visit as deeply emotional. He placed flowers at the grave and took a private moment to speak to his mother in his thoughts. He then stepped away so Meghan could have a moment of her own.
When he returned, he found Meghan kneeling quietly at the grave. Harry later asked what she had prayed for, and Meghan gave a simple two-word answer: “clarity” and “guidance.”
That moment has taken on new meaning as reports continue about a possible family visit to the UK. For Harry, bringing Archie and Lilibet to Diana’s resting place would likely be a deeply personal way to help them feel connected to the grandmother they never met.
It is still unclear where Harry, Meghan and their children would stay if the visit happens. However, reports suggest King Charles has offered his younger son and his family accommodation on a royal estate.
