Rafe Heydel-Mankoo believes the future king may eventually step aside for the next generation
Royal historian and commentator Rafe Heydel-Mankoo has made a surprising prediction about the future of the monarchy, suggesting that Prince William could become the first British monarch to voluntarily abdicate.
Speaking on a recent GB News programme alongside presenters Anne Diamond and Mark White, Heydel-Mankoo shared his thoughts on how the Prince of Wales may approach kingship differently from previous generations.
During the discussion, Anne noted that William appears to be preparing for the future with what she described as a more relaxed and modern outlook.
"Prince William, of course, the future king, is planning for the future," she said, adding that he seems to have "a slightly more laidback attitude towards modern life."
Heydel-Mankoo agreed, predicting significant changes once William eventually ascends the throne.
"Yes. I think we're going to see a huge change in the type of monarchy we have when he comes to the throne," he said.
The royal expert went on to suggest that William may one day choose to step down in favour of a younger successor.
"We can see King Charles is very much his mother's son in a way that you wouldn't necessarily be able to say about Prince William, who I think will have a very different idea of what it is to be a monarch," he explained.
"I personally think Prince William will be the first monarch to abdicate."
According to Heydel-Mankoo, such a move could allow the next generation of royals to take on the role at a younger age and shape the monarchy for the future.
The comments quickly sparked reactions online after GB News shared a clip of the discussion on X.
Many royal watchers disagreed with the prediction. One supporter wrote, "No way that Prince William will abdicate. He has so much support and was the last royal to be personally trained by the late Queen."
Another commenter argued that William would be unlikely to place such responsibility on his eldest son while he is still young, writing, "William is years from taking the throne. He would not burden George by giving him the crown when he is young."
While there is no indication that William has any plans to abdicate in the future, the historian's remarks have reignited debate over how the future king may reshape the monarchy when his reign eventually begins.
