Prince William has made a surprising confession about his father, King Charles, revealing that the monarch has never been a fan of football.
The Prince of Wales made the admission during his appearance on the New Heights podcast, hosted by Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce, on Friday, July 3. During the conversation, William opened up about his lifelong support for Aston Villa F.C.
When Travis asked whether his love for football had come from his father, William quickly replied, “Absolutely not.”
“My father hates football,” he added, prompting Travis to respond, “Oh no.”
William went on to explain that football was not a major part of his family background.
“My family haven’t got a particularly long history with football,” he said. “There are a few of us who support teams. My football love came from friends taking me to my first match and from school growing up. You can’t avoid the football chat. It’s everywhere.”
The Prince of Wales said some of his childhood friends first introduced him to the sport by taking him to a match, which helped spark his passion for the game.
William has long been known as one of Britain’s most high-profile football supporters. He is also patron of The Football Association and has often been seen cheering on Aston Villa.
His podcast appearance came not long after he travelled to Istanbul to watch Aston Villa defeat SC Freiburg 3-0 in the UEFA Europa League final, securing the club’s first major European trophy since 1982.
