Meghan Markle had the potential to become one of the most influential members of the royal family, but tensions and competing egos prevented that from happening, according to a royal author.
The Duchess of Sussex stepped down as a senior working royal alongside Prince Harry in 2020. However, author Simon Vigar believes Meghan could have played a major role within the monarchy if circumstances had unfolded differently.
In his book The Four Wives of Windsor, Vigar describes Meghan as “obviously a massive asset” who was “brilliant with the crowd” and had the ability to become a significant figure within the royal family.
“She should have been, could have been, fantastic for the royal family, but egos on both sides got in the way,” he claimed.
Vigar suggested Meghan’s confidence, public appeal and ability to connect with people could have made her a transformative royal figure, potentially drawing comparisons with Princess Diana.
However, he said relations behind the scenes had deteriorated significantly by 2019.
According to the author, “nobody was talking to each other,” while Harry and Meghan appeared to feel increasingly isolated and alone.
He added that the couple “should have been transformative” for the monarchy.
Harry and Meghan officially stepped away from royal duties in 2020 and later moved to California with their son, Prince Archie. They subsequently welcomed their daughter, Princess Lilibet.
Since leaving Britain, the couple have spoken publicly about their difficult experiences within the royal family, including allegations concerning racism and a lack of support from the institution.
