Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have faced years of speculation over whether they could eventually lose their royal titles.
The debate has intensified following the treatment of Prince Andrew, with some royal watchers questioning what circumstances could lead to similar action being taken against the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Lady Colin Campbell has now shared her view on the issue, revisiting claims she previously made in her 2020 biography, Meghan and Harry: The Real Story: Persecutors or Victims?
Speaking on her YouTube channel, the socialite argued that Harry and Meghan would probably only face the immediate removal of their titles if they became involved in a serious criminal case.
“I have said all along that the only immediate way that Meghan and Harry would be stripped of their titles,” she said, would be if they were charged with a serious criminal offence.
Lady Campbell compared the hypothetical situation to the case of Spain’s Infanta Cristina and her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin.
The couple previously held the titles of Duke and Duchess of Palma de Mallorca. Urdangarin was later imprisoned after being convicted in a corruption case, while Cristina lost the title of Duchess but retained her birth title as an Infanta of Spain.
Lady Campbell claimed the British Royal Family had gone even further in its handling of Prince Andrew.
“The Royal Family has gone one better with Prince Andrew and stripped him of his princely rank and his Royal Highness style,” she said.
She then suggested Harry and Meghan were already being brought under greater control, adding: “Will it happen? Let us see what happens because Harry and Meghan are being reined in as we speak.”
Could Harry and Meghan Return as Working Royals?
Lady Campbell also dismissed speculation that the Sussexes could one day return to official royal duties.
“The idea that the Royal Family will have them back as working royals is palpably ridiculous,” she said.
She criticised continued media reports about possible reconciliations and “olive branches” between the couple and the Royal Family, insisting that a formal return was not realistic.
“I think there’s more chance of me becoming a working member of the Royal Family than there is of Harry or Meghan,” she joked.
Lady Campbell concluded that there was “absolutely no chance whatsoever” of the couple returning as working royals, while suggesting that some members of the public were still waiting to see whether they would face further consequences.
