Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, claims that King Charles did not love her before they married, according to the report about his memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.
The account also claims that Charles treated Diana cruelly during the early days of their relationship.
An unnamed source familiar with Diana’s story told RadarOnline that the timing made these claims especially painful. According to the source, Charles allegedly made hurtful comments before the couple’s wedding, rather than only after their marriage began to break down.
The source said Diana was very young and already dealing with the pressure of preparing to marry the heir to the throne. They suggested that criticism of her appearance, along with hearing that her future husband did not love her, would have been deeply upsetting.
The insider added that Spencer’s account describes a relationship with serious problems from the beginning.
“Whatever happened subsequently, that is an extraordinarily sad foundation on which to begin married life,” another unnamed source said.
Charles and Diana married in 1981.
