Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams has claimed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle worked with Earl Spencer to damage King Charles’s reputation. He presented this as his opinion, without offering evidence of any coordination.
His comments followed claims about Charles in a book by Earl Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother. The claims have also raised questions about whether Harry and Meghan knew about the book’s contents before it was published.
Fitzwilliams said the couple would be “absolutely delighted” by the attention the story had received.
He referred to a claim that Charles had said Diana would soon be forgotten. According to Fitzwilliams, the Palace strongly denied that Charles made the remark.
Asked whether he believed Charles had said it, Fitzwilliams noted that the alleged comment dated back nearly 30 years. He suggested that remarks from that time could be viewed differently today.
He said the controversy would bring Earl Spencer considerable publicity and could harm the King’s reputation.
Fitzwilliams also pointed to Harry and Meghan's close relationship with Spencer as the reason for his suspicion that they had worked together. However, a close relationship alone does not establish that they coordinated their actions.
He warned that the dispute could affect public opinion of both Charles and the monarchy.
