Royal expert Angela Levin has commented on the growing disagreement between King Charles and Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer.
The dispute began after claims from Spencer’s upcoming memoir were reported by the Daily Mail.
According to the report, Spencer alleges that the then-Prince Charles told him, “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough,” in the days following Diana’s death in 1997.
The reported comment was allegedly made during an argument about whether Diana’s sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, should walk behind her coffin at the funeral. Spencer reportedly opposed the idea.
King Charles took the unusual step of responding to the allegations through a spokesperson on Wednesday. The spokesperson said that personal grievances could affect a person’s “reason, judgment and memory.”
Levin, who often comments on the royal family, later shared her view on social media.
“It was difficult who would walk with Princess Diana’s coffin,” she wrote. “Prince Charles wanted to walk behind, as did Charles Spencer.”
Levin claimed Prince Philip was worried that Charles and Spencer might argue, so he decided to join them. She said Philip then asked William and Harry if they wanted to walk as well.
According to Levin, the two young princes felt they should take part. However, she said Harry found it painful to hear other people crying because it was his mother who had died.
