Royal commentator Tom Bower has accused Charles Spencer of working with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to damage King Charles’s reputation.
Bower suggested that Spencer’s book about his sister, Princess Diana, was about more than sharing memories or selling copies.
“[Earl Spencer] is not only selling a book, but he’s also undoubtedly formed an alliance with Harry and with the Duchess to somehow damage the King,” he said.
The claim is Bower’s assessment. The comments provided do not establish that Spencer, Harry and Meghan planned any action together.
His remarks came as Spencer shared allegations about Charles’s behaviour after Diana’s death, including his claim that Charles appeared happy.
Speaking to the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, Spencer also recalled a heated phone conversation in which he said Charles criticised the Spencer family and their sense of duty.
“[The King] went ballistic, would be the right term,” Spencer claimed. He said Charles continued speaking angrily for what felt like a significant amount of time while he listened.
Spencer said he was stunned by the exchange.
“After a stunned silence, I said, ‘I cannot believe you just said that’, and I hung up on him,” he recalled.
