Dr Michael Dixon highlights concerns over dependency on quick fixes and unsustainable healthcare practices.
The head of King Charles’ medical team, Dr Michael Dixon, has issued a stark warning about growing health risks associated with the misuse of weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, which were originally intended for diabetic patients.
In an interview with The Times, Dr Dixon expressed alarm over the increasing popularity of these medications among the general public, describing it as “madness.” He also criticised the overuse of antidepressants, revealing that one in six UK adults are on such medication, a statistic he attributes partly to time pressures on general practitioners.
The monarch, currently undergoing treatment for cancer, has taken a holistic approach to his health, a philosophy shared by Dr Dixon, who was appointed Head of the Royal Medical Household in 2022.
Dr Dixon advocated for a shift toward personal responsibility in health management, stating, “The endgame is the community looking after itself and individuals taking charge of their health.”
He added, “If you only have five or ten minutes per appointment, it’s easier to prescribe Prozac than to address deeper life stresses. But the more we rely on professionals and quick fixes, the less sustainable our healthcare system becomes.”
Friends of King Charles have noted that his commitment to alternative medicine has been instrumental in managing his health challenges over the past year. Dr Dixon’s emphasis on holistic solutions aligns closely with the monarch’s beliefs, underscoring the importance of addressing root causes rather than symptoms.
