King Charles Expresses Regret Over Missing Fiji Visit Due to Health Concerns

The monarch shares disappointment over a shortened Oceania tour while hosting a climate reception at Buckingham Palace.

King Charles has opened up about his regret over missing part of his recent royal tour in Oceania, citing health concerns as the reason for cancelling visits to key destinations, including Fiji. The King’s comments came during an international sustainability reception held at Buckingham Palace on November 6, where he addressed global business and climate leaders.

The event, attended by Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Net Zero Secretary Ed Miliband, and Environment Secretary Steve Reed, centred on accelerating climate action. Discussions also highlighted the upcoming conclusion of negotiations on the Global Plastics Treaty and the anticipated UN climate conference, COP29, in Azerbaijan.

During a conversation with Fiji’s High Commissioner, Jovilisi Vulailai Suveinakama, King Charles expressed his disappointment, saying, “I felt so bad we couldn't get to Fiji on the royal tour; the doctors wouldn’t allow it.” The King’s schedule was adjusted in October following health advice after his recent cancer diagnosis, which led to the cancellation of stops in New Zealand and Fiji.

Despite the challenges, the King appeared in good spirits at the reception, wearing a sharp navy suit as he greeted attendees. Queen Camilla, however, was notably absent from the event as she continues to recover from a chest infection at home in Wiltshire under medical supervision. The 77-year-old Queen has been advised to rest, but remains hopeful for a swift recovery.
