The Duke of York resists King Charles's demands, fearing a move could be seen as an admission of wrongdoing.
Prince Andrew is currently embroiled in a tense standoff with King Charles, refusing to vacate the Royal Lodge in Windsor despite the King's decision to cut off his £1.3 million annual allowance. According to royal commentator Hugo Vickers, Andrew’s reluctance stems from a fear that complying with the request would be perceived as publicly accepting guilt for past allegations.
The 64-year-old Duke has resisted relocating to Frogmore Cottage, the former residence of Harry and Meghan Markle, which Charles has deemed a more suitable option. Andrew continues to live at the Royal Lodge with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, and is reportedly concerned about the implications a move might have on public perception.
Hugo Vickers explained, “Andrew feels that if he leaves the Royal Lodge, it could be seen as a public admission of guilt, despite no formal charges.” This concern comes in light of his 2022 out-of-court settlement with Virginia Giuffre.
Facing financial difficulties, Andrew is struggling to afford the rising maintenance costs for the Royal Lodge, which requires extensive repairs. Despite these challenges, he remains determined to stay, spending his time with family, golfing, and enjoying the Windsor grounds.
Vickers noted that a move to Frogmore Cottage might be a practical solution, given its location within the Windsor security perimeter. However, he warned that if Andrew remains obstinate, King Charles may have to enforce the relocation, potentially escalating the ongoing dispute.
