Princess Anne, the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, shared a connection with her mother that was both warm and reserved, reflecting the unique dynamics of royal life.
One significant moment highlighting this bond occurred when Anne had to seek the Queen’s permission to marry Mark Phillips in 1973, as required by royal tradition. When reflecting on the experience, Anne displayed her signature wit, remarking, “Not half as difficult as asking permission to get divorced.”
Anne and Mark announced their engagement on May 29, 1973, before marrying in a grand televised ceremony at Westminster Abbey later that year. Their marriage, however, ended in separation in 1989, with the divorce finalised in 1992.
Later that same year, Anne remarried Sir Timothy Laurence, a Royal Navy officer, at Crathie Kirk near Balmoral Castle in Scotland. This location was chosen because the Church of England, at the time, did not permit divorcees to remarry, whereas the Scottish church allowed it.
